In order to justify the last four hundred years of inhuman brutality, the dominant power structure has erased all history of resistance and attempted to cast enslaved Africans as stupid, docile, and complicit in their own domination. On the eve of the anniversary of Nat Turner’s rebellion, we must take the time to remind ourselves that thousands of men and women over many generations did indeed rise up and fight back against the genocidal institution of Southern (and Northern) slavery. The struggle continues today.

White folks must become race traitors. We must become intimately, uncomfortably, painfully acquainted with the blood shed in our names, from Columbus on down to White Clay. We must open ourselves up to the hurt and fear and rage of those upon whom this civilization has clamped its jaws. And then we must help them kick its fucking teeth in.
